Simple Nervous System Reset Tools to Calm the Body and Mind
My own anxiety, which has felt a little heightened recently, inspired me to return to some simple tools that help calm my nervous system.
So today, I wanted to share two gentle practices that you can use anytime 🤍
1. Butterfly Hug
The Butterfly Hug is a somatic and mindfulness-based technique that is also sometimes used in EFT and trauma-informed practices.
It is a simple yet powerful tool that can support the body and mind during moments of stress, anxiety, or nervous system overwhelm.
By combining gentle bilateral tapping with slow, mindful breathing, we help the body return to a sense of regulation, presence, and safety.

2. Silent Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) Tapping
Silent EFT tapping is a simple practice that can help calm the nervous system by sending soothing signals to the brain and body, supporting a shift out of stress and overwhelm.
The gentle rhythmic tapping can also help interrupt repetitive thought loops and bring attention back into the present moment.
This practice can be a supportive tool during moments of anxiety, emotional overwhelm, or mental fatigue.

When to Use These Practices
These two practices offer simple nervous system “reset” moments — for both adults and children.
They can be used anytime you feel overwhelmed, anxious, emotionally dysregulated, or simply tired.
For example:
• with anxious or dysregulated children
• at work
• before bedtime
• whilst travelling
• as a parent co-regulating with your child
• before or after a difficult conversation
• when you need a moment of self-compassion
• as part of your daily emotional wellbeing and self-care rituals

How These Practices Support the Nervous System
When the nervous system becomes overwhelmed, it can move into a heightened stress response — often described as fight, flight, or freeze.
In these moments, the first need is not to fix or solve, but to gently return to a felt sense of safety.
Both of these practices help support that process by bringing attention back to the body, the breath, and the present moment.
For children especially, safety is often restored through co-regulation — through connection, presence, and feeling emotionally held, rather than corrected.
Closing Reflection
We do not always need to do more or force ourselves to “feel better.”
Often, healing begins by gently reminding the body that it is safe enough to soften 🌿
